Community Involvement
We’ve supported local pet nonprofits from day one.
Community Involvement
At Mountain Star, We Help Animals That We Will Never Meet
Telehealth
Our doctors provide free ophthalmology telehealth consults to Colorado veterinarians.
Continuing Education
We provide free, quarterly ophthalmic surgery workshops at Mountain Star, attended by veterinarians and veterinary students alike. Attendees are provided with the appropriate ophthalmic instruments and mentored in the techniques so that they can expertly help their future patients with eyelid conditions.
Supporting the Humane Colorado
Dr. Chavkin has provided on-site mentorship for Humane Colorado doctors for commonly performed ophthalmic surgeries. Mountain Star has donated the proper ophthalmic surgical instruments so that shelter animals can receive the best possible care.
We offer free and reduced-rate services to our nonprofit partners within the community
Since opening our doors, we have donated over $77,000 in discounted and free services to our nonprofit partners. We provide free eye examinations every May as part of the ACVO National Service Dog Exam Event.
Mountain Star Veterinary Specialists certify Freedom Service Dogs to begin training for military personnel.
A longtime and devoted supporter of the Humane Colorado, founder Dr. Matt Chavkin donates his time and expertise by mentoring their veterinarians on ophthalmology care and procedures for their shelter patients. In 2023, Mountain Star recently donated $2K worth of new surgical instruments to the Humane Colorado to help upgrade their clinic.
Giving Back Recaps
Supporting Pets, Their Families, and Our Community
We’re also proud to give back through our partnership with CSU Spur and Humane Colorado, where Dr. Chavkin and our specialists volunteer time and expertise to make specialty care more accessible. Every day, we’re inspired to support pets, families, and our community with kindness, skill, and genuine connection.
The Inspiring Story of Pickles
Pickles came to see us at the ACVO free eye check event. He was born with a cleft lip and neurological damage to one side of his face. His dad, a paramedic, wanted Dr. Chavkin’s reassurance that his eyesight isn’t affected. Pickles has an incredible sense of smell. His family adopted him to be a family dog, but noticed his skill early on. At only 6 months old, Pickles is training to be part of the elite FEMA disaster cadaver search dog team. He’ll help bring calm to terrible situations and provide closure for families who lose loved ones. If selected, he’ll be 1 of 100 FEMA search dogs in the US (and only 1 of 2 in Colorado!).
