Professional Bios - The Why:

We create professional bios and bio cards so that we can introduce our team members to clients and partners in a professional way, conveying far more than we can in a business card. We use professional bios on our website, in press releases, and in emails that we send to partners.

Traditional bios in the veterinary world tend to be a similar format. We want to tell the story of how we got into the profession or how much we love animals, which is not what is interesting to clients Before you work on your bio, please read this excellent short article 1 on writing a professional bio. It will help guide you on how to structure what you want to say. A few high-level tips:

  1. People looking at your bio are potential life-long clients, and they’re deciding whether or not to bring their pet to you or your hospital. Tempting as it may be to write about your own pets, your bio should be about you and what makes you the right choice.
  2. What potential clients really want to know is whether you are qualified and, most importantly, can you get the job done for them. Your bio should instill confidence in you and your ability to help clients reach their goals, so minimize the fluff – short is good (170 words).
  3. Stories of life experience can play a role by making you seem approachable and warm, but they shouldn’t be the meat of your bio. The bio is a place to talk about your specialties and training, certifications, schools, professional associations, commitment to ongoing professional development, and education. It’s not about what got you into veterinary medicine - it’s about what you’ve learned and accomplished since then.
  4. Instead of focusing your bio on the way you feel about animals, make it instead about the benefits you have to offer. Avoid the pitfall of talking only about benefits for pets; talk about the needs of your clients. What will you do for them? Help them solve a problem? Make living with their pet more enjoyable? Provide care that keeps their pet happy and healthy?
